The difference

The parts that are usually missing from a China tour

You book with an Australian company. Most private China tours are sold by companies in China. Your money, your contract and your refund rights all sit overseas. With us they sit in Melbourne, under the Australian Consumer Law.

We run the trip ourselves. Our Shanghai team briefs every guide and driver, holds the bookings and is on WhatsApp while you travel. Problems get fixed the same day.

Real-name bookings handled. Museums, the Forbidden City and high-speed trains need passport-registered bookings that foreign cards often cannot complete. We do that part before you land.

Prices that say what is in and what is out. Every quote lists hotels, transport, guide days, tickets and meals line by line. Nothing appears later as a surprise.

The Great Wall at Mutianyu in summer
Who this is for

Three kinds of travellers we built this for

  • Families going back to see relatives

One partner speaks Chinese, the other doesn't, and the kids speak none. Hire a guide for the days the family wants to sightsee, and let everyone enjoy it.

  • First-timers who don't want a coach tour

You want Shanghai and the Great Wall without forty strangers and a shopping stop. A private car, a good guide and a plan that bends when you are tired.

  • Australian importers and business owners

You buy from China and want to see the suppliers. We get you into the markets and factories with someone who can translate the negotiation, not just the menu.

04Questions

Things people ask before they book

Do Australians need a visa for China?
Australian passport holders can currently enter China visa-free for stays of up to 30 days for tourism, business and family visits. The policy has an end date that keeps being extended, so check before booking flights or ask us. Our visa-free guide has the details.
Who actually runs the trip in China?
Our own team. Mandarin Route has a Melbourne office and a Shanghai operations team with licensed partner agencies, drivers and English-speaking guides we work with directly. You are never handed to a subcontractor you have not heard of.
Can I pay in Australian dollars?
Yes. You book with Mandarin Route Pty Ltd, an Australian company, pay in AUD by card or bank transfer, and receive an Australian tax invoice. Your booking is covered by the Australian Consumer Law.
Are there shopping stops?
No. None of our tours include commission shops, tea houses or factory outlets. If you want to shop we will take you to real markets and tell you what things should cost.
